NOTES FROM THE TABLE

A different kind of sequence

Here are the details for this mode. Four complete King-to-Ace runs clear the game. Moves build down in the same suit rather than allowing cross-suit destinations. Scorpion on pnolf.com uses one 52-card deck with four suits. The tableau has seven columns.

The initial seven columns

Here are the details for this mode. The first three cards in each of the first four columns are face down. All cards in the last three columns are face up. Three cards remain in the stock. Each opening column contains seven cards for a total of 49 tableau cards.

Build in the same suit

Here are the details for this mode. A King cannot land on another card because no higher rank exists. A moved group's leading card must land on a card exactly one rank higher in the same suit. A seven of hearts can land on an exposed eight of hearts. A seven of hearts cannot land on an eight of spades.

Move exposed groups

A few details help explain this feature. The selected cards do not need to share a suit to travel together. The selected cards do not need to descend in rank to travel together. The leading selected card still has to meet the destination rule. Any face-up card can be selected together with every card beneath it.

The empty-column rule

Keep these points in mind. An empty column accepts a King or a group led by a King. An empty column is therefore less flexible than an empty column in ordinary Spider. A group led by a lower rank cannot enter an empty column. Cards beneath a moved King do not need to be in sequence.

Uncover another choice

Here are the details for this mode. An exposed card can carry the cards beneath it when its own destination is legal. Undo restores the earlier hidden-card arrangement when the move is reversed. Removing all face-up cards above a hidden card turns that hidden card face up. The next hidden card is revealed automatically.

Use the stock once

The following details apply here. Dealing places a face-up card on each of the first three columns. The stock contains one final deal of three cards. This Scorpion version permits its stock deal when columns are empty. There are no further stock cards after the three-card deal.

Collect ordered runs

Keep these points in mind. All thirteen cards in a collected run must be face up. The game removes a qualifying run automatically from the bottom of a column. A completed run must descend from King to Ace in one suit. Moving an unordered group does not make that group a completed sequence.

Plan around blocked cards

The following details apply here. A move can carry unwanted cards along with a useful leading card. Checking the whole moved group helps you anticipate what will become blocked. Replay and Undo let you explore another approach to the same layout. Hint lists legal choices without promising a winning continuation.
